Numerous governments across Central and Eastern Europe are taking steps to conserve electricity and avert an energy crisis as record low water levels on the Danube River have forced power plants to the brink of shutting down.⁣

In Romania, where Danube water flow has fallen to less than a third of its July average, naval forces have carried out a controlled explosion to divert a large volume of water to the Cernavodă nuclear power plant to assist with its cooling operations.⁣
⁣
A reactor unit at the power plant has already been shut down for safety reasons, and further power downs are planned. ⁣
⁣
Neighboring Hungary faces a similar predicament: on Monday, prime minister Peter Magyar announced that the country's sole nuclear power station would be shut down this week, as record-low water levels of the Danube limit cooling operations.⁣

The 2,857 km Danube flows through 10 countries across central and eastern Europe, and is a crucial conduit for shipping, industry and manufacturing, energy generation and tourism. ⁣
