Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Thursday that illegal migrant truck drivers who were let in under President Joe Biden didn’t get background checks before starting the job. 

“President Biden let in millions of illegals into this country,” Duffy said during a briefing alongside President Donald Trump where they announced the Freedom Haulers program. “And he thought it would be a good idea that when they come in, they get a job, and they get a job driving a commercial motor vehicle,” Duffy continued. “They didn’t have the training. They didn’t have the skill. We didn’t do background checks in the last administration.” 

The Freedom Haulers program is a program that encourages veterans to apply to be truck drivers and removes illegal migrant truck drivers. Duffy said that because background checks weren’t conducted on the drivers, they ended up getting into accidents and killing American citizens. 

“You’re a family that was on their way to Walmart, or you’re going to church on Sunday, you could lose your life on an American road,” he said. 

Last year, it was reported that an illegal migrant driver is facing charges for a deadly Florida Turnpike crash that killed three people. 

In October of 2025, reports indicated an illegal migrant from Serbia and Montenegro turned his semi-truck into oncoming traffic in Indiana and killed a driver in a Subaru. 

In California, another illegal immigrant driver caused a collision in Ontario, California and killed four people according to reports.
