Filming House of Sharks gave us the opportunity to capture some of the more unusual ways of getting close to these animals, including this moment with Tristan Gutteridge inside the Rover as a shark approaches in the foreground. What makes this frame stand out is not just the unique setup, but the glimpse it offers into the shark’s behavior. Sharks are often portrayed as maniacal, bloodthirsty, unthinking creatures, but in my experience, they are curious, cautious, and tentative.

In this moment, the shark was working out what this strange “fake” shark was, deciding whether it was a threat or something it could safely approach. Of course, sharks are capable of incredible strength and power, but it is their intelligence that continues to fascinate me. When you spend time with them, you begin to see there is much more behind that eye. They are constantly assessing their environment and making calculated decisions.

Seeing sharks in this way offers a different perspective on these remarkable animals and the complexity of their behavior.
