Happy 10th anniversary to the film that changed my life: THE INTENT.

After releasing It’s A Lot, I was feeling a bit deflated and wondering what was next. Then, over Christmas 2013, nickyslimting called me with an idea for a street film called Rudeboy Intentions.

A few months later we’d built out the script, raised a small budget from friends who believed in us, called in favours on almost everything, from locations to cars and shot the film in just 15 days.

The first edit wasn’t what I’d imagined, so thanks to Penny Woolcock, I met editor Alex Fry. Together we reshaped the film into the version we’d always hoped for. Nicky somehow managed to pull together an incredible soundtrack through countless favours, and Keni Desai convinced us to change the title to THE INTENT. Thank God he did.

When we took the film to distributors, most offered very little or nothing at all but we knew the value of what we had. So we decided to release independently. We became filmmakers, distributors and marketers overnight. We designed posters, delivered the film to cinemas and digital platforms, made four music videos and did whatever it took to get people to watch.

The gamble paid off when after a successful independent theatrical run and strong VOD, we eventually found a global audience on Netflix, where people all over the world discovered it. It’s now available on Amazon Prime globally.

The biggest lesson wasn’t about making films. It was this:

Don’t wait for permission.

If you believe in something, find a way. Looking back, that’s exactly what we did. And 10 years later, it’s a lesson I still need to remind myself of.

Thank you to every single person who believed in us and helped make THE INTENT possible. ❤️
