If you want stronger sales leaders, stop treating leadership as a reward for production.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is promoting someone after a great month. Selling and leading require different skills, and one strong month doesn't tell you how someone performs over time.

Instead, give every new rep a clear path. For the first 90 days, they should consistently prove they're ready by being a top performer, following the sales system, acting ethically, showing up consistently, building relationships with the team, and earning the trust of leadership.

We've found this objective approach dramatically reduces the risk of putting the wrong person into management. It also gives ambitious reps something just as valuable: clarity. They know exactly what they need to do to earn the opportunity instead of wondering whether promotions are based on favoritism.

Do this today: write down the 5–10 objective requirements someone must meet before they're eligible for a leadership role. If your team can't clearly explain the path, it probably doesn't exist.

How do you decide when someone is truly ready to lead?
