Today marks 35 years since John Singleton’s groundbreaking classic dropped in theaters on July 12, 1991. The movie remains one of the most powerful and influential hood classics ever made.

Written and directed by the then-23-year-old John Singleton, “Boyz n the Hood” was a raw, unflinching look at life in South Central Los Angeles. Singleton’s vision was bold and personal. He captured the realities of gang violence, police brutality, fatherhood, and coming of age with authenticity, heart, and cinematic precision that earned him Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (making him the youngest and first Black director nominated for the former).

The film also marked #IceCube’s huge big-screen debut as the unforgettable Doughboy, bringing his street credibility and magnetic presence to a role that helped launch his acting career alongside an incredible cast including Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and more.
