With Memorial Day weekend in full swing, we zigzagged our way through the trees for the most anticipated match in New England. It’s only when you’re cruising down a winding Vermont road that the name of their beloved USL club makes all the more sense. This budding team has captivated the hearts and minds of soccer fans beyond the state, and their 2023 home opener rallied 2500 fervent supporters. Virtue Field at UVM was packed to the brim with die-hards and curious newcomers that had cropped up from every corner of the region. Ben and Jerry’s samples, flags, drums, and chants kept the sea of green in the stands swinging ahead of kickoff. As soon as the whistle blew, there was never any doubt the Green would take care of business. It’d been 3-0 against the Boston Bolts away last week, and for this grand home opener, it was 3-0 against Albany Rush. Gevork Diarbian, the shifty No.10 from Rhode Island, found the back of the net for the first time this season and earned himself MOTM honors. As it’s now tradition, he got to take a bottle of the finest Vermont maple syrup home for his efforts. No sweeter gesture to close out the night. With a belly full of ice cream and a heart filled with joy, we all headed out back the way we came. Forward Nacho Lerech said it best: the people are what make a place special. If one thing’s for sure, is that most of us will be there to do it all over again next week.
