🦌 Meet Distraído: the first rehabilitated Huemul Deer to return to the wild from the Huemul Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Chile.

Last year, Re:wild partner rewildingchile, an offspring organization of tompkins_conservation, this center, a vital step toward recovery for one of the world’s most threatened mammals. 

Distraído is an adult male Huemul Deer who successfully recovered from a bacterial infection, commonly transmitted to deer from livestock, that required a month of care and treatment at the center. 🏥 Without Rewilding Chile’s intervention, Distraído likely wouldn’t have survived. His story is a symbol of hope for this Endangered species, with fewer than 1,500 Huemul Deer remaining in the wild. 🏔️ 

🌿 This milestone is part of the broader effort to create the Huemul Corridor, a large-scale conservation strategy reconnecting Huemul populations across the southern Andes, in collaboration with Chile’s Ministry of Agriculture, conaf_minagri, and sagchile.
