Michelle Vacca was 49 when she was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer after an emergency room visit for an unrelated health concern. She had no symptoms and no known risk factors. Through surgery, a clinical trial and advances in precision medicine, Michelle gained access to treatments that helped change the course of her care.

Her story is a reminder that lung cancer doesn't discriminate. In Orange County, it is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among adults, even though only 7% of adults smoke. The county also has one of the highest rates of lung cancer in women under 50 in California.

This World Lung Cancer Day, we're sharing Michelle's story to raise awareness that anyone can develop lung cancer and to highlight how research, clinical trials and personalized treatment continue to improve care and create new possibilities for patients.
