THE NECK IS NOT AN AREA FOR A HEAVY HAND

This video was recorded during one of my trainings with a healthy young model. Her carotid artery was clearly visible pulsating beneath the skin. It was a powerful reminder of how closely our hands work to some of the body’s most vital structures.

The carotid arteries are the primary arteries that supply oxygen rich blood to the brain. They travel along both sides of the neck. Nearby is the carotid sinus, which contains pressure sensitive receptors that help regulate blood pressure and heart rate.

Every person’s anatomy is unique. Some carotid arteries lie deeper, while others are much closer to the surface, regardless of age. We cannot know exactly where these structures are in every client, which is why the neck should always be treated with respect.

As estheticians, facialists, massage therapists, and manual professionals, we can absolutely work with the neck. We can gently massage it, mobilize the tissues, and improve circulation and lymphatic flow. However, our touch should always be light, controlled, and anatomically informed. We should never intentionally apply deep pressure directly over the carotid artery or carotid sinus.

Pressure in this area can, in susceptible individuals, trigger a sudden drop in heart rate or blood pressure, which may cause dizziness or even fainting. Greater caution is especially important when working with older adults or clients who may have underlying cardiovascular disease, even if they are unaware of it.

Our clients come to us for beauty, wellness, and relaxation, never unnecessary risk.

Beautiful results do not require force. They require knowledge, precision, and respect for human anatomy.

This is the first time I have ever asked you to share one of my posts. If this message helps even one practitioner avoid harming a client, it will have been worth it.

Together, let’s continue raising the standard of our profession through science, education, and safe hands.

Much love,

Helena ❤️🫀❤️
