The Cleveland Cavaliers are setting their sights on Kevin Durant as their primary target to shake up the NBA offseason. Following an Eastern Conference Finals sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks and missing out on LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland’s front office recognizes that standing pat is no longer an option. With owner Dan Gilbert declaring that the roster was nowhere close to where it needed to be, the Cavaliers are actively exploring trade avenues to bring the two-time Finals MVP to Ohio as the missing piece alongside Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley.

Acquiring Durant would immediately address Cleveland’s biggest flaw: a desperate need for an elite, proven perimeter scorer in high-stakes postseason moments. Coming off a season where he averaged 26 points per game while shooting over 50% from the field and 41% from deep, Durant remains one of the most lethal offensive weapons in basketball history. Furthermore, pairing Durant with James Harden once again and placing him next to Mitchell creates a terrifying offensive hierarchy, allowing Cleveland to comfortably load manage the veteran superstar during the regular season so he is fully primed for deep playoff runs.

With the Eastern Conference transforming into an arms race, featuring the Sixers’ powerhouse trio, the Knicks defending their title, and the Heat retooling around Giannis Antetokounmpo  Cleveland going all-in for Durant represents their best path to ultimate glory. Even with his contract running through 2028, Durant’s championship pedigree and unmatched shot-making could finally propel the Cavaliers over the top. If Cleveland can assemble the right trade package to entice Houston, bringing in the fifth all-time leading scorer would instantly re-establish the Cavaliers as genuine favorites to bring a trophy back to Believeland.
