The Biscoff cookie was never just about the cookie.

Starting May 19, Delta is moving to a distance-based snack model, with complimentary snacks and drinks only served on flights over 350 miles.

Which raises the obvious question:

Who knows how many miles their flight is?

Passengers think in time. Airlines usually communicate in time. A 45-minute flight feels different than a three-hour flight. A 349-mile flight versus a 351-mile flight? That is not exactly a customer-friendly distinction.

The bigger issue is what the snack represents.

Air travel has already become more transactional, more segmented, and more stripped down. Snack and drink service is one of the few remaining gestures that still makes the experience feel like hospitality instead of pure transportation.

Small touches matter. They break up the flight. They make the time feel shorter. They remind passengers there is still a human layer to the service.

Cutting that may save money.

But it also removes one more reason the experience feels premium.
