Tesla’s autonomy story is still caught between milestone and reality check.

The company has now crossed 10 billion miles on its Full Self-Driving system, a number Elon Musk once tied to the path toward unsupervised autonomy.

That is a massive data advantage.

But the key word is still “supervised.”

FSD remains a Level 2 driver-assistance system, which means the driver is still responsible. Hands near the wheel. Eyes on the road. Liability with the human, not the company.

That distinction matters.

Because the future Tesla is pointing toward is not just better driver assistance. It is a world where robotaxis, personal vehicles, and software updates start to blur together. The theory is that Tesla’s massive real-world driving data helps find the edge cases, improve the system, and eventually push more autonomy across the fleet.

That could be transformative.

But until the responsibility shifts from the driver to the vehicle, the milestone is not the finish line.

It is proof of how much ground Tesla has covered, and how much still has to be solved.
