What does Uber see in Rivian that makes a $1.25 billion bet make sense?

Apparently, a robotaxi future.

Uber plans to invest up to $1.25 billion in Rivian as part of a deal to deploy as many as 50,000 robotaxis through 2031, starting with autonomous versions of the upcoming R2.

For Rivian, it is more proof the company is trying to become more than an EV brand. For Uber, it is another move in the race to own autonomous mobility at scale.

The bigger takeaway?

The autonomy conversation is getting real money again.
