The used car market isn't one market anymore.

It has split in two, and most dealers are only playing in one half.

On one side, you have the mainstream market. CPO units, late-model trades, and rising average prices ($26,918 in May). Inventory here is growing, reaching 2.12 million vehicles.

On the other side, you have the affordable market. The sub-$15,000 vehicles that your community desperately needs.

Inventory here is dangerously thin. Just 33 days' supply.

While your floorplan may look full of high-quality, high-gross CPO vehicles, a huge portion of potential buyers see nothing they can afford. The result? Used retail sales dropped 3.9% year-over-year, even with more 'inventory'.

Treating these budget-friendly cars as a separate business is the only path forward. They need a unique strategy for acquisition, reconditioning, and marketing that prioritizes velocity and accessibility.

Dealers who see this shift from 'inventory' to 'affordable inventory' will win the trust of their market.
