## Caption

Some inexpensive jewelry advertised as sterling silver has been found to contain extremely high levels of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal, instead of genuine silver. Cadmium exposure over long periods can damage the kidneys, weaken bones, and increase the risk of certain cancers. While skin absorption is usually low, worn or damaged jewelry and accidental ingestion can increase exposure. Buying certified jewelry from reputable sellers and looking for verified 925 sterling silver markings helps reduce the risk.
