The uncomfortable truth ……..

Tennis coaching often separates things that players experience as one integrated whole.

Technical or tactical.

Mental or physical.

Conscious or unconscious.

Cognition or action.

Skill training or strength and conditioning.

These distinctions may help coaches organise programmes, qualifications and conversations—but that does not mean performance is naturally divided into independent parts.

A player does not first perceive, then decide, then move.

They do not leave their psychology outside the court while practising technique.

And they do not develop physical capabilities independently of the intentions, information and actions that organise movement.

In tennis, perception, cognition, emotion and action are deeply intertwined within the player–environment relationship.

Technique is shaped by tactical intention.

Decision-making is expressed through action.

Confidence changes with the opportunities a player perceives.

Physical capabilities influence what actions are available—and how the player perceives them.

This doesn’t mean the distinctions are completely useless. The problem begins when convenient labels become isolated training departments and we assume the separate parts will automatically reconnect during competition.

The player is not a collection of independent systems.

They are a whole person continuously interacting with a changing environment.

Stop coaching the fragments and expecting the player to assemble them during the match.
