Conrad Thompson called Roman Reigns “probably the most overrated main eventer in WWE history” on the latest 83 Weeks, and Eric Bischoff agreed with him.

The comments came as the two discussed Reigns retaining the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam on Sunday. Thompson prefaced the take by saying it would annoy people, then described Reigns with a term borrowed from the music business, calling him an “industry plant” — someone whose success is manufactured and backed rather than earned organically. He argued WWE’s fortunes would not change at all if Reigns disappeared tomorrow.

Thompson said WWE pushed Reigns “down our throats forever,” pointing out that this is the exact phrase Triple H has used to explain why the company is not pushing Bron Breakker harder. He also questioned how many fans list a Reigns match among their favorites, and contrasted Reigns’ schedule with the promotional workload carried by Cody Rhodes and, before him, John Cena — describing Reigns as flying in, wrestling the same slow match and leaving. He summed it up: “He’s Goldberg if Goldberg worked more than 10 minutes.”

On The Bloodline, Thompson said the storyline was good but has entered what he called its black-and-silver nWo era, a fun moment in time that is over.

Bischoff, who said fans would not expect it from him, agreed with the take. He called The Bloodline one of wrestling’s great stories while maintaining it falls short of the nWo’s impact, and took responsibility for running the nWo into the ground by over-expanding it. His warning was that WWE is repeating his mistake — that “riding it till it dies” will leave fans with a worse memory of The Bloodline than it deserves, though he added that a compelling new direction would win him back.

Reigns has held world championships for most of the past six years, including the 1,316-day Undisputed WWE Universal Championship reign that ended at WrestleMania XL.
