Traveling solo was an eye opener. ✈️

I was exhausted, drained, irritable. I didn’t want to do anything new, didn’t want to venture outside the house alone with the kids. I was feeling suffocated. Then something changed everything.

My brother (who lives in Brazil) was traveling to Miami with my SIL. He called me the afternoon he was flying, insisting I come. My first thought — wouldn’t that be amazing? But logistically, how? Kids are in summer break, they have activities, my husband can’t take vacation right now. How could I make this work? After all, I miss my family, I want to see them, I want a vacation from the chaos at home.

My incredible husband figured out a way. It took family and friends to help make it happen. Three hours later he’d purchased my tickets and booked a hotel. Less than 24 hours later, I was on a plane to Miami. I was in a charming hotel, in a quiet room, feeling like I deserved the break.

Seeing my family has been the best and most rewarding part of this trip — but I also got to spend time with myself. Oh boy, how I needed that. I feel like I can think. I can let go of the stress.

This trip was an eye opener because I didn’t know how much my brain needed a break. I love my family, but stay-at-home life is not short of exhausting. The same routine, the same chores, the constant refereeing between siblings… I’ve often felt like I wanted to pack my bags and say “see you later.”

My hope is that when I get home, I’ll have a better attitude, more patience, more energy to do things outside the house. We NEED a break. We MUST take a break. It’s not selfish — it’s about balance, and about taking care of ourselves so we can be better at home.

I know it may not be on the table for everyone to get away for a few days, to be “alone.” But if you can make it work — oh boy, you are going to feel amazing.
