It's a number that's difficult to comprehend until you picture what it actually looks like.

By the way, this figure represents reported cases only. Sexual violence remains significantly underreported. Fear of not being believed, stigma, intimidation, distrust in the criminal justice system and barriers to accessing support all contribute to survivors choosing not to report. Even the National Strategic Plan on GBVF recognises that many incidents never appear in official statistics.

If you were to do the maths, the real number is likely much higher. Most of us know that, not because of statistics alone, but because of our lived experiences; the stories shared within our communities, & the survivors who, for various reasons, are denied justice within our systems.

Statistics matter because they help us understand the scale of the crisis. But behind every number is a person whose life has been changed forever.
