The N55 335i is the car BMW should've built from the start — and the fact that you can buy one for used Camry money in 2026 is genuinely absurd.

BMW spent the entire E90 generation letting N54 owners beta-test twin-turbo problems so they could drop a single-turbo motor that actually works. The N55 fixed the injector failures, fixed the wastegate rattle, kept the same 300hp stock output, and bolted into the same chassis that already embarrassed cars twice its price on backroads. A Stage 1 tune on this thing puts you at 370+ wheel horsepower on the stock turbo with zero supporting mods. That's not a project car — that's a Tuesday.

But here's where people mess up: they buy a 2009 or 2010 because the price is right and then wonder why they're replacing the water pump and the valve cover gasket in the same month. The 2011+ build dates cleaned up the VANOS solenoid issues and got the revised electric water pump. That's the sweet spot. You want a 2011 or 2012 with maintenance records and an owner who didn't delete every emission component and call it a "build."

Budget the maintenance before you get excited about the purchase price. Oil filter housing gasket, charge pipe, and a cooling system refresh are basically table stakes — not if, when. Set aside $1,500-$2,000 on top of the purchase and you're walking into ownership with eyes open instead of checking your bank account every time the engine light flickers.
