Somebody right now is on Craigslist staring at a 2009 G37 sedan with 94K miles, clean title, $9,500 — and they're about to pull the trigger thinking they just found a luxury sport sedan for Civic money.

I get it. The VQ37VHR is one of Nissan's best motors ever made. 330hp, rev-happy, sounds incredible through a decent exhaust. The chassis is basically a slightly softer 370Z. On paper, it's the move.

But there's a reason clean G37 sedans from 2008-2011 are priced where they are, and it's not because the market forgot about them.

The oil gallery gasket issue on those early VQ37s is the kind of problem that doesn't show up on a test drive. It doesn't throw a code until it's already too late. The gasket degrades, oil pressure drops, and by the time you notice the motor is starving itself. That's not a $400 gasket job either — you're pulling the motor or dropping the subframe depending on who's doing the work, and if it's already caused bearing damage, you're looking at a long block swap on a car you bought specifically because it was "affordable."

Stack that on top of the other stuff nobody budgets for — the galley gaskets, the timing chain guides on higher-mileage examples, the fact that Infiniti parts aren't exactly Nissan Sentra pricing — and that $9,500 bargain starts looking like a $15K commitment real quick.

Here's the thing though: Nissan revised the gasket design. The 2012-2013 models got the updated part, and they're genuinely solid cars. The price difference between an '09 and a '12 is maybe $2-3K more up front, but that gap pays for itself the first time you DON'T have to pull a motor.

Buy the right year or don't buy one at all.

Save this before you buy the wrong setup.
