Get rid of it or keep it? 🤔 

We got to attend the MLS All-Star Game in Charlotte thanks to continental_tire and experienced firsthand why it remains a staple in the American soccer calendar. 

Although many might think the All-Star tradition in our soccer landscape comes from imitating baseball or basketball, All-Star games in American soccer leagues actually date back to the 1920s! The first “full” All-Star team assembled by a professional soccer league in the US was in 1927, when the ASL All-Stars played the Uruguayan National Team, which had won the 1924 Olympics (and would go on to win the 1928 edition). The game ended 4-2 in favor of Uruguay. 

Ever since then, assembling All-Star teams has been a tried-and-true tradition in American soccer for a whole century. Of course, the current format has drawn inspiration from other sports to add skills challenges and different components to this yearly event.

In the end, we really enjoyed our time in Charlotte, immersing ourselves in this week-long festival that feels like America putting its own endearing spin on the game and a cool way to make it approachable for new fans who might come from different sports backgrounds. Hopefully it’s a tradition that continues to grow and evolve over time!
