#HipHopHistory - On August 4, 1998, #SnoopDogg released his third studio album, Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told, marking a major new chapter in his career.

Released through No Limit Records and Priority Records, the album was Snoop’s first after leaving Death Row Records earlier that year. It also represented a dramatic shift from the West Coast sound of his first two albums, with longtime collaborators like #DrDre, #NateDogg and #WarrenG largely absent and No Limit artists taking center stage.

While the album received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and is often considered one of the weaker releases in Snoop’s catalog, its commercial success told a different story.

Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 520,000 copies in its first week. By March 2008, it had reportedly sold more than 4.4 million copies in the U.S., making it Snoop Dogg’s second-best-selling album in the country behind his 1993 debut, Doggystyle.

Love it or hate it, the album proved Snoop could leave Death Row, reinvent himself with No Limit and remain one of hip-hop’s biggest stars.
