pgLang’s new signee Imani Imani first met with the label’s co-founder Kendrick Lamar during his ‘Mr. Morale’ tour stop in Amsterdam, where she was living at the time. Before this, she had been speaking with pgLang’s other co-founder Dave Free. “It was special because before that, Dave would never speak on Kendrick, and I liked that, because it was really a personal connection we were making—a business-focused one—and it wasn't about who he was working with or anything,” Imani says. But one day, she sent a song to Dave that she really believed in, and he responded by saying, "OK, I want you to meet Kendrick." So they met for the first time at a studio in Amsterdam. “I did melodies on something, just to test it out, which was really nerve-racking,” Imani remembers. “We had a little bit of conversation, but it was mostly special because you just feel the energy of someone, and that's the thing that really inspires me.” “He inspires me because, to me, he's the best at doing what I also strive for, which is making music you can listen to and enjoy, but there's so much depth to it,” she says. “He inspires me by how he taps into culture, but also knows how to remove himself all the time. He's there when it's needed and he does it in such an authentic way.
