He waited until he was already in custody to tell the trooper he could have gotten away.

DPS says a trooper was patrolling I-17 in Phoenix on Tuesday when a silver Honda Civic Si came up fast from behind, weaving through traffic without signaling and tailgating the patrol car. Troopers say he nearly caused multiple crashes before they got him stopped.

The driver is under 21. He told the trooper his license was already suspended from a previous reckless driving citation, from DPS, and then argued he could not be driving recklessly because he was not exceeding the speed limit. Worth knowing, that is not how it works here. Reckless driving in Arizona is about disregard for safety, not the number on your speedometer. You can absolutely do it at the limit, and weaving through traffic with no signals while tailgating a marked patrol car is a pretty clean example.

He also volunteered that there was a loaded, unholstered handgun sitting in the center console right next to him, and said other officers had seen it before and never asked about his age. A search turned up multiple unopened cans of beer behind the driver’s seat. DPS has not said anything about impairment.

Then, while being booked, he told a trooper he had been getting ready to run before they blocked him in. “I could have outrun you.” He’s in jail and has not been convicted of anything.
