An Arizona mom says her 11-year-old son spent more than two hours outside in 111° heat after the first day of middle school because she was told he had already been picked up.

The sixth grader missed his bus in Casa Grande and waited outside campus without a phone while officers and neighbors searched the area after he was reported missing.

A custodian eventually found him still at the school. His mom says he had run out of water, developed a headache and thought she had forgotten about him.

Following the incident, the district says it reviewed what happened and changed its dismissal procedures to help ensure students are accounted for before leaving campus.
