Two brothers spent Thursday night into Friday morning fighting on and off inside a Chandler apartment. By morning one of them was dead and the other was in custody.

Chandler police were called Friday morning to the Sky at Chandler Airpark Apartments near McQueen and Germann roads. Simon Verbick was shot and died at the scene. His brother, Vincent Verbick, was found near the scene and arrested.

At an initial court appearance Friday evening, state prosecutor Ashley Stetson laid out the timeline. She said the two had been in an on and off fight since late Thursday night. Vincent had told Simon to leave the apartment, and Simon repeatedly came back into his bedroom. Stetson said Vincent fired during the escalation, and that Simon then charged at him before Vincent fired again and killed him.

Vincent is charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault. He’s being held on a $1 million bond.

Worth knowing how to read this one. Everything above came from the state at an initial appearance, which is a proceeding where only prosecutors present. No defense has been heard, nothing has been tested, and the charge is second-degree rather than first, meaning the state isn’t alleging it was planned. This one has a long way to go in court.
