How did the Geluk tradition of Tibetan Buddhism begin?

The Geluk tradition was founded by Tsongkhapa, a Tibetan Buddhist monk and scholar, in the early 15th century during a period of religious renewal in Tibet.

Tsongkhapa emphasized rigorous study, monastic discipline, a gradual path to awakening, and meditation rooted in earlier Indian Buddhist teachings, especially those of Atisha, a renowned Indian Buddhist monk. 

The Dalai Lamas later became among the most widely recognized figures associated with the Geluk tradition. Beginning in the 17th century, the Geluk institution of the Dalai Lama became closely intertwined with the political history of Tibet.
