## Caption

With many students in the Sacramento area heading back to school this coming week, families are spending the last few days of summer break getting school supplies. This advertisement from H.S. Crocker & Company was published on this day, August 7, in 1882 in the Sacramento Daily Record-Union newspaper and was one of the many places to get school supplies in Sacramento at the time.

The H. S. Crocker & Company was founded by Henry Smith Crocker (brother of Charles Crocker of the Big Four) in Sacramento in 1856. The company expanded to San Francisco in the 1860s. The company still exists today (as a subsidiary of Transcontinental Inc.) but has moved to various locations over the years with its current headquarters in Huntley, Illinois.

If you are looking for things to do before the school year starts, the Sacramento History Museum is open 7 days a week with Underground Tours departing our museum everyday!

Looking to go on an Underground Tour? Go to our website below to check out tour times, availability, and to book your tickets! You can also buy tickets in person at the Museum or by phone at 916-808-7059. It’s best to purchase in advance though as tours have limited space.
