After spending 22 years with the Green Bay Packers, Sullivan is bringing many of the principles behind that organization’s sustained success to Miami: stability, continuity, a consistent evaluation process and a commitment to building through the draft.

The immediate challenge is significant. Sullivan inherited a roster with limited short-term financial flexibility and explains the difficult decisions Miami has already made to create draft capital and improve its long-term salary-cap position. The Dolphins accumulated 13 draft picks, moved on from several highly paid veterans and intend to build their core through the draft before supplementing it through free agency.

Sullivan also explains why Jeff Hafley was the right head coach for the job, what Miami sees in Malik Willis and why Kadyn Proctor’s versatility made him different from every other player in his draft class.

The larger focus is culture. Sullivan says Miami must identify players who love football, can resist the distractions surrounding them and remain committed when immediate results do not appear on the scoreboard.

He also discusses one of the most important lessons of his scouting career: NFL teams often miss more on the person than they do on the player. Work ethic, toughness, resilience, character and the ability to handle both success and failure are now central to the type of team Miami is trying to build.
