Since 2000, a civil rights organization documented over 70 suspected 
modern-day lynchings across the Deep South 20 in Mississippi alone in a new study called “Crimson Record.” Case after case: a Black person found hanging, and a suicide ruling issued in days, sometimes before family questions are even answered.

Raynard Johnson. Otis Byrd. Lennon Lacy. Trey Reed. Kyle Bassinga. And dozens more.

This isn’t about assuming every ruling is wrong. It’s about asking why a documented, decades-long pattern in the same handful of states isn’t being investigated AS a pattern by federal authorities. Lynching became a specific federal hate crime in 2022 but it’s still one of the hardest 
crimes to prove, especially when each case is treated as isolated.

Say their names. Ask the questions. Demand a pattern-level investigation.
