We are our history, and that’s why I loved Austin Wells’ Thurman Munson tribute. Learning from those who came before is important in how we move across this life.

Tributes aside, when Wells was statistically one of the worst hitters in the league, I did feel bad. The defense was there, and he doesn’t get enough credit for carrying a staff that has never been healthy at the same time, and I didn’t love the idea of just throwing anybody in there. People forget just how important the catcher position is. There are 6,000 pitching changes in a game, and the catcher needs to know everybody.

There might be some hope for Wells, though. Since that four-game set against the Rays where he hit two homers, he is hitting .269/.377/.558 with a 163 wRC+. Funny enough, last year, after being benched, Wells started a game against Tampa and hit two homers. From there, he looked like his old self.

For this team’s sake, Wells is one of those guys that the Yankees need to succeed. Defense up the middle is one of the most important aspects of team construction, and now, with George Lombard Jr. and hopefully Spencer Jones playing more centerfield from here on out, Wells can be the missing piece of the puzzle.

Wells has a 61 OPS+. Last year he had a 94. Can he get close to that this year? He could do it with a strong finish.
