## Caption

It's a common misunderstanding that probation is a punishment handed down and left to run its course. Amanda Lohf, court services officer in the 28th Judicial District, sees it differently. 

"While it is a consequence of one's actions, probation is a privilege and it offers an opportunity for the probationer,” she said. “They get to work with someone who will hold them accountable and has the knowledge to connect them to the appropriate resources." 

For some people she works with, that relationship carries even more weight than a case plan.  

"As a probation officer, you may be the only supportive, positive role model they have in their life," she said. 

It's a perspective that frames the purpose of her work.  

"The best way to truly reduce recidivism is to help someone become successful," she said.
