Many people who come into contact with law enforcement and the courts are struggling with behavioral or mental health challenges. Addressing their needs requires a multidisciplinary approach that brings together courts, law enforcement, treatment providers, and community partners.

Working together, we can connect people with the help and support they need to break the cycle of repeated interactions with the justice system and build a path toward recovery and stability.

In Kansas, courts in the 7th, 10th, 11th, 28th, and 29th judicial districts have implemented special behavioral health courts. They are designed to connect participants with mental health treatment and community support services, leading to less jail time and increased public safety.

In 2022, following the first Kansas Mental Health Summit, the Supreme Court established a Multibranch Communities of Practice State Delegation. The court also encouraged chief judges to create local communities of practice to act as liaisons to the statewide delegation.

Chief judges partner with leaders in their community from various disciplines to find ways to improve court and community response to those in the justice system affected by mental health conditions. Out of 31 judicial districts, 29 are either starting their process or are meeting regularly.
