For Brian Swenson, court services officer in the 28th Judicial District, his job  is less about enforcement and more about equipping people with skills many never had the chance to learn. 

"Our profession isn't just about following court orders, it's about helping someone rebuild their life, so they don’t return to the system. It is a balancing act between community safety and rehabilitation," he said. 

That work starts long before a case plan takes shape. 

"We first look at a probationer through a comprehensive assessment during initial intake to determine areas of needs and risk. Based on results in those areas, we bridge them to community resources to begin the rehabilitation process," he said. 

He's learned through firsthand experience how much of his job is teaching the fundamentals of life and nothing beats seeing his work pay off. 

"I enjoy running into former probationers in public settings who tell me the impact I made in their lives and learning about their progress and achievements since their release from probation," he said. 

Brian also wants people to understand the weight this profession carries behind the scenes. 

"Probation officers lead thankless positions often overlooked by our communities," he said. 

And the people doing it? He says, "my colleagues are some of the most intelligent and caring people I know. They could be working in any profession."
