Eight generations later, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is still the blueprint for the modern hot hatch. 

The original Mk1 arrived in 1976 with a simple formula: light weight, front-wheel drive, practical hatchback packaging, and enough performance to make everyday driving genuinely fun.

The Mk2 and Mk3 grew the GTI into a more mature performance car, while the Mk4 pushed refinement and premium feel further than ever before.

With the Mk5, Volkswagen brought the GTI back toward its enthusiast roots, combining turbocharged power, sharp handling, and the increasingly important DSG transmission.

The Mk6 refined that formula, while the MQB-based Mk7 became one of the most complete and capable GTIs ever produced.

Today’s Mk8 adds significantly more technology and performance while still carrying the same basic idea that made the original such an icon.
