I was in the middle of pushing Dash out when I heard someone say call 911.

I was less than two minutes postpartum with Benny when the urge to push came back. Dash was being born breech. His limbs and body came first — that part, with a breech baby, is actually the easier part. It’s the head that’s last. And when a breech baby’s body is out and head is still in, everyone in the room is on a clock.

My team was telling me to push. Loudly.

And I remember thinking clearly to myself, I know…I’m waiting for a contraction.

Here’s what I didn’t know. After you deliver your first baby, your pushing contractions stop. Your body has completed the task it was building toward. The low pressure you feel as a baby descends? Gone. Your nervous system is already anesthetized from one delivery. There is nothing to push against. You have to tell your brain to push and hope your body hears it.

Nobody told me that.

The second thing: I heard “call 911” and felt my entire body react.

What I know now — and wish I had known then — is that calling 911 is standard protocol for my birth team with any breech delivery. Not because something has gone catastrophically wrong. Because they want backup within arms reach before they need it. It is a precaution. A professional, practiced, deliberate precaution.

In the moment it felt like a signal that something was failing.

It wasn’t. It was the system working.

Dash was born. He needed a little help getting started — oxygen, warming, firm hands — as many breech babies do. And then he was here. Fully, completely here.

If you are planning a vaginal breech birth — home or birthing center — know these two things before you’re in it:

If it’s twins, your pushing contractions will stop after baby A. You will push anyway.

911 will likely be called. It means your team is doing their job.

I would have given anything to know both of those before that night. 🤍
