The weekend Brit and I announced our pregnancy with Thea, my dad discovered and connected with several of his donor-conceived kids for the first time.

Back up: in dental school, my dad was a sperm donor. He was also dating my mom — a psychology grad student working toward her LCSW — at the time. She knew. And she wasn’t just fine with it, she thought it was beautiful.

Fast forward thirty years. My wife and I went to a sperm bank, found our own donor, and got pregnant — and none of it triggered any memory of this for my family. That’s how at peace this chapter was for my parents. It wasn’t a secret. It just wasn’t top of mind, until the same weekend we announced our pregnancy, it suddenly was.

Today, I have twelve biosiblings. We’ve met them all. We love them. We do an annual reunion, and smaller get-togethers scattered throughout the year.

People hear this story and go straight to my dad. But I’ve always credited my mom.

She was a 20-something-year-old dating a guy in dental school when she said yes to this. She had no way of knowing that yes would turn into a marriage, three kids of their own, and a dozen more who would want to know their biological father — and, by extension, her.

None of this happens if she isn’t the person she is. She’s the reason my dad ever felt safe enough to pursue it. She’s the reason there was no shame for any of us to inherit. She’s the glue.

This is the last thing on my list of reasons my therapist mom shaped who I am. But it might be one of the biggest ones.
