I am no potty training expert. But I’ve now done it three times, three completely different ways, and I have one strong opinion: follow your kid’s cues. Even when they change daily. Potty training regressions are real and they are brutal and the fastest way to get there is to push before they’re ready.

Here’s how it went for us.

For Thea, I did all the things. I read the books. Followed the accounts. Talked to every mom friend I had. Bought the potty watch. I was prepared in a way I have never been prepared for anything.

We dedicated a long weekend. Naked on day 1 with a potty watch timer going off every 20 minutes. Day 2 was naked only from the waist down with the potty watch timer going off every 60 minutes. Day 3 was dressed normally and listening to her own body. She was 2.5. 

For Nathan, also around 2.5, we didn’t have a long weekend. So day 1 was naked, on the potty, in front of the tv, sucking down Pedialyte popsicles one after the other. He was hydrated and peeing constantly. By day two he knew exactly what that pee pee feeling was. 

And then came Zoe (3.5) and an entirely different human. Zoe has always done things her way on her timeline. She didn’t take a few wobbly steps and gradually learn to walk. She waited until the week before she turned 18 months and stood up and ran. Literally.

We should have seen this coming.

We saw signs she was ready for months. But I was very pregnant with the twins and didn’t have the physical quickness potty training often requires. 

Then a few days ago, Zoe woke up, got dressed, and put on underwear. No pull up. Just underwear, like she’d been doing it forever. 

We said: okay, but all the pee and poo have to make it into the potty.
She said: okay.
And that was that.

We are one week in with 1 accident, and I say that lightly, because she was at school and made a very deliberate decision to pee on the grass. She knows to get out of the pool and find either grass or a drain. Honestly? Respect.

Anyways, that’s the only expert opinion I have. 🤍 How did potty training go in your house? I want all the stories — the good, the chaotic, the cringe. ↓
