Growing up, I thought every house sounded like ours.

Brit and I were friends for years before we ever dated — she was around my family plenty in high school, long before we became a couple in college. She’d hear the way we talked to each other and just stare at me. Like I’d spoken another language. I hadn’t. I’d just repeated something my therapist mom said so many times I didn’t know it was unusual.

That friend became my wife. And she’ll tell you — my family, the way we talked, the way nothing got thrown except words that were never meant to hurt — was part of what she fell in love with.

Nobody sat me down and taught me these. I absorbed them the way you absorb an accent — dinner table stuff, sibling fight stuff, said so many times over so many years that it stopped sounding like language and just became how we talked.

I didn’t know we were the weird ones until Brit told me we were.
