FAQ: What skincare products should I avoid before and after my chemical peel?

To get the best results from your chemical peel and reduce the risk of irritation, there are a few products you’ll want to pause before and after treatment.

Before your chemical peel (typically 3 to 7 days prior, or as directed by your provider), avoid:

Retinol and prescription retinoids (such as Retin-A or tretinoin)
Exfoliating acids like glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid
Physical scrubs and exfoliants
Benzoyl peroxide
Waxing, dermaplaning, or other exfoliating treatments on the treatment area
Excessive sun exposure or tanning

After your chemical peel:

Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, and scrubs until your provider tells you it’s safe to resume them.

Use a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day.

Do not pick, peel, or scrub flaking skin, as this can cause irritation or unwanted pigmentation.

Avoid hot tubs, saunas, strenuous exercise, and excessive heat for the first 24 to 48 hours, or as recommended by your provider.

Every peel is different, so your aftercare instructions may vary based on the strength of your treatment and your skin’s needs.
