Philip Rivers coming out of retirement at 44 years old to join the Indianapolis Colts was one of the craziest things I’ve seen in recent NFL history. After spending five years away from football, Rivers got the call when Daniel Jones suffered a season ending Achilles injury. Shane Steichen picked up the phone, and somehow the Los Angeles Chargers legend quarterback was on an NFL field once again. Rivers built an NFL Hall of Fame career with the San Diego Chargers and LA Chargers, spending 16 seasons throwing passes to football legends LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, Keenan Allen, Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd, Darren Sproles, Mike Williams, and Hunter Henry. He battled Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Patrick Mahomes across multiple eras while becoming the greatest quarterback in Chargers franchise history to date.

He then went to the Colts for the 2020 season, leading Indianapolis to the playoffs with Jonathan Taylor, T.Y. Hilton, Michael Pittman Jr., Quenton Nelson, and Darius Leonard. Most NFL fans thought it was a fine ending, but he ended up going back years later. Rivers never won during his return, and the Indy Colts still had a chance to make the NFL Playoffs if they won their second regular season game against Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars, but despite Rivers throwing a touchdown, the Colts lost. Once the Houston Texans beat Justin Herbert and the Chargers the day before, they were eliminated. I wonder why they didn’t trust Riley Leonard or try Anthony Richardson again, but I guess they thought Rivers still had magic left in his tank.
