## Caption

Your logo doesn’t break in the place you designed it,
But instead in the five places it actually gets used.

You approved it three inches wide on a white screen, in a PDF, with nothing else on the page. That’s the one environment where every logo looks fine.

Then it goes to work.

It shrinks to the little square in a browser tab; 16 pixels across. Your name doesn’t fit at that size. The shape is all you get.

It gets cropped to a circle by Instagram, Google and every email client on earth. The corners are already cut.

It gets stitched, and a needle can’t hold a stroke under a millimetre. Thin lines fill in and close up.

It gets printed in one ink on a stamp, a foil block, an embosser. The gradient turns to mud.

It goes on a van door read from a hundred feet, and at 45mph, where you need ten-inch letters and detail is the first thing to go.

One artwork can’t clear all five. That’s why a logo ships as a set instead of a single file.

So run the five tests before you approve anything.

Start with the cheapest one: drop it to 16 pixels and look at it. If you can’t tell what it is, neither can they.

This is the work. The part that happens before anyone sees a logo.

I’m breaking down a piece of it every day.

Follow along if that’s useful to you.
