A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage has crashed into the Moon, with newly released imagery revealing fresh impact marks on the lunar surface.⁣
⁣
Images released by KARI/KASA and NASA show before-and-after views of the impact site after the school-bus-sized rocket body struck the Moon at high speed early Wednesday.⁣
⁣
The 4-ton rocket stage, which launched a Firefly Aerospace lunar lander in January 2025, slammed into the Moon at around 8,690 km/h (5,400 mph). The impact was unintentional and occurred near Einstein Crater on the Moon's western limb.⁣
⁣
Astronomers had been tracking the rocket's trajectory for months, but no spacecraft orbiting the Moon was in position to capture the collision as it happened.⁣
