Here’s a peek into a 12-day Japan journey we recently designed for first-time visitors who wanted to see the highlights without turning their trip into a checklist.

Their adventure began in Tokyo, where they spent four nights easing into Japan through a mix of ancient temples, modern neighborhoods, vintage shopping and intimate counter-seat dining. It gave them time to experience the city properly, rather than simply ticking off landmarks.

From there, we built in a night in Hakone to slow the pace before Kyoto. A traditional ryokan stay, hot springs, lake views and the chance to see Mount Fuji created a completely different rhythm after the energy of Tokyo.

Next came Kyoto, where their days were centered around Japan’s cultural traditions. They visited iconic temples, walked beneath the red torii gates of Fushimi Inari, experienced a traditional tea ceremony and explored the quieter streets that make the city feel so distinctive.

We also added a day trip to Nara, where they saw the Great Buddha, visited historic shrines and wandered among the city’s famous free-roaming deer.

The trip finished in Osaka with three nights of incredible food, lively neighborhoods and a final dose of city energy before heading home.
