As lilianthuramofficiel reminds us, the racism we see in sport reflects the inequalities that persist in our societies. Yet sport also offers something powerful: the possibility to come together, to confront our prejudices, and to question them.

Because when we act together, whether on a pitch or in everyday life, barriers begin to fall. And this is where sport can lead to something greater: development and peace.

On the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we are reminded that sport is far more than competition. It is a shared space where values take shape: fair play, respect, solidarity. The very foundations of more inclusive and peaceful societies.

At UNESCO, we believe that sport is a fundamental right and a powerful driver for social development, gender equality and youth empowerment. From classrooms to communities, these values extend far beyond the game.

Changing our societies starts with questioning what we think we know — and choosing to build something better, together.
