It’s Wild Wednesday: Summer Edition, and today we’re checking in with someone who apparently believes spending the entire school year keeping kids active isn’t quite enough. 🐯🏀☀️

DJDS PE teacher, multi-sport coach, and all-around good dude sbarclay18 is spending his fifth summer at Camp Shai jccdenver, which happens to coincide with his fifth year at DJDS!

🏃 Whether he’s teaching PE, coaching our Tigers, or leading sports at camp, Spencer’s goal is pretty simple: help kids have positive experiences with physical activity, build confidence, and understand that struggling with something new isn’t necessarily a bad thing. As Spencer puts it, “sometimes struggling with something is actually a positive sign of growth.”

That means fundamentals come first—for beginners AND experienced athletes—before the competition begins. Because sometimes even the best players need to get back to the basics.

🎶 Of course, camp Spencer is a little different from school-year Spencer. In addition to sports, he’s a regular fixture at morning circles, leading songs and games and helping start each day with what he describes as “super energetic and positive” energy.

And his favorite camp song? One he co-created called “Sticky Vicky”...about a piece of tape.

We have a few questions about this. But perhaps some things are best left at summer camp. 😂

Here’s to Spencer, his unmatched school (and camp!) spirit (see photos for proof or his willingness to engage in every version of spirit day) and to his five summers of Camp Shai, five years of DJDS, countless games, drills, songs, and probably several thousand kids being reminded to wear appropriate shoes.
