You’ve heard of the famous Okavango Delta. But have you heard of Namibia’s Kwando Delta? 🌿🐘

Yep - Namibia has its own version! Smaller, greener than anything you picture when you picture Namibia, and few tourists have even heard of it.

Zoom in on a map 🗺️ and find the skinny strip poking out of Namibia’s northeast corner, wedged between Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. That’s where we found ourselves after a 3-day drive across the country. 

Elephants have moved through this corridor for centuries (before the countries’ borders even existed). 🐘

Then the poaching started. 

Rangers were under-resourced and floods blocked access to the islands… and the wildlife population nearly evaporated.

Even the birds learned to stay away. 💔

But this story has a happy ending: Conservationists have spent the last few years fiercely protecting the land and restoring it as a safe passageway… and it’s working. 🙌🏼

Poaching has dropped dramatically. We saw families of elephant wading through the rivers, huge herds of buffalo grazing, lions playing and chasing one another… and falling asleep to the songs of the thousands of birds that now live here is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. 🦜🎶 

It’s accessible from any of these 5 countries, but you probably won’t see many other tourists over here — it might be Namibia’s best-kept secret. 🤫
