Day 14 of Seahawks training camp, and another chance to challenge my vision, refine old techniques, experiment with new ones, and simply try to get better at my craft.

This daily visual journal of camp started as a personal challenge: make one interesting, storytelling image each day, get myself out of a creative rut, and sharpen my vision heading into the season.

In this frame, defensive lineman Jared Ivey explodes from a low position — “with his hand in the dirt” — working on firing out of his stance to engage a blocker. The shaded structure at the right of the frame forces him to stay low and use his legs to generate power with that first explosive burst.

I knew I wanted to photograph this from a low angle for a couple of reasons. First, putting the camera near the ground emphasizes just how low he starts. Second, a low vantage point can make an athlete feel even more powerful, strong and imposing in the frame.

But I wasn’t about to lie down on the grass that close to the drill. Because often in the type of work I do, it’s not always “all about getting the shot.”

Here’s why: the safety of the athletes always comes first. Especially when I choose to be close to the action. I have to stay hyper-aware of everything happening around me so I don’t put someone at risk simply because they didn’t know I was there.

In this case, I wanted a lower point of view than I could get from kneeling, so I put my Nikon Z 8 on the ground and tilted the rear LCD screen up toward me. This allowed me to compose and follow the action while still on my knees — allowing me to stay mobile enough to get out of the way quickly if I needed to.

Try new ideas. Refine the ones already in your toolbox. Miss some frames. Make a mess of others.

I promise some great ones will find their way to your camera.

Thanks for coming on this journey with me. I’m having a blast. I’m so grateful for all your follows, likes, comments and questions. It’s a personal project that I want to share so that hopefully you can learn along with me.
